This year, y’all. This. Damn. Year. 2016 was downright malicious, from heartbreaking celebrity deaths to gut-twisting celebrity ascensions, from miscarriages of justice to the wholesale slaughter of hundreds. In America, from across the globe, the bad news just kept pouring in. As news goes, it was clearly headed for the record books. And then 2017 said “Hold my beer.” I prefer to give bad news first. Here it comes. My 2017 retrospective begins with some of the tragedies, in no particular order.
No doubt, 2017 had some pretty low points. But it wasn’t all bad! There were plenty of big stories, but more than a year of tragedy, 2017 was a year of exposure. The FBI’s Russia probe. The Paradise Papers. The opioid epidemic. College hazing. The alt-right. Sexual assault. True natures revealed themselves, light shone into corners of society we’d left dark, and the public is listening and responding to these revelations. It was a spectacular year in the truest sense of the word, and that included a fair few reasons to smile. You've been patient, so here are some highlights.
All in all, I’d say this year was less depressing than 2016. The news stories loomed larger than last year’s, there were more fireworks, but there was a lot of good to balance the bad. We made it through twelve months of continuing spectacle, but it wasn’t just endless stink as in 2016. Let’s not lose the progress we fought so hard for this year. Keep the momentum. 2018 is our chance to not only regain lost ground, but to reforge the scaffold of our society and build it back stronger than before. Happy New Year, everybody. Peace, Ian
